Morecambe in the middle of the last century was one of the top resorts of Britain as some of the beautiful buildings show. In the late sixties and seventies Morecambe fell into decline as a result of cheap foreign holidays and a lot of the properties fell into a state of disrepair and the town became really very tatty. However a few years ago Morecambe was declared a regeneration centre and million of pounds is being invested in the upgrading of the town. This has included a new promenade with promenade garden, children's play areas and splash pools and two new sand beaches. The centrepiece of the regeneration is the Midland Hotel on the promenade which opened this year after an eleven million pound facelift by it's owners Urban Splash. They have tried to keep the building in its art deco design. This has kick started Morecambe and a lot of the pride has returned to the town. The birthplace of Eric Morecambe and Thora Hird tourism is on it's way back. You actually have to queue up to take a picture of the Eric Morecambe statue on the prom. This was unveiled by the Queen and takes pride of place. The statue is surrounded by all the famous sayings and the name of every celebrity who appeared on the Morecambe and Wise show. An Eric Morecambe museum is currently under debate.
We find it incredible just how many trippers come here and not just in the summer. Most of the hotels are full all through the winter with coach parties as it has less expensive accommodation here than in the Lakes. Drive or walk along the seven miles of the promenade on any afternoon in the summer, no matter what day of the week , and you will not believe how many people are in the town. This is all good for the town and the residents as the area improves so does the value of housing and the availability of jobs. However no one is sure how much the economic downturn will affect Morecambe and already we hear that some of the projects have been put on hold.
One thing is certain we are very lucky to have found such a lovely little house in such a wonderful place. Both Fran and I have never ever been happier and it feels like we have lived here for years.
Perhaps one day you will make it up to visit us at our little home from home.
